Constructing the Pits
The pits containing the army reach about four to six meters below ground. The figures were placed in tunnels along an east-west axis. A wooden framework of pillars and crossbeams enclosed each tunnel, supporting a ceiling of reed mats and rammed earth walls and floors. Ramps gave access to the pits so the warriors could be moved into position. Once the army was installed, the entire structure was covered.
